Each year, Fall for the Book hosts both historians and writers of historical fiction, with 2009 welcoming E.L. Doctorow, James Ellroy and other novelists in that latter category. Can historical fiction ever be as insightful and informative as straight history in offering the "truth" about the past?

In late 2007, National Public Radio posted a story revealing that women read far more than men (9 vs. 5 books/year). The statistics gathered from the 2008 Fall for the Book festival show the same trend in those who attended book-related events. Clearly, reading is not inherently a female thing. Why, then, are these statistics showing what they are?

Man Without a Hat on "Vampires"

Reading what Virginiagirl said about a vampire novel being among the top books on Amazon, I remembered that the Best American Short Stories for 2008 had a vampire story in it, Karen Russell's "Vampires in the Lemon Grove." This edition was edited by Salman Rushdie, which may explain a lot. Russell seems to be a writer who mixes the somewhat bizarre with the regular, having published a first book of stories entitled St. Lucy's Home for Girls Raised by Wolves and currently working on a novel about a family whose members wrestle alligators. It would seem that we have a possible new form of magical realism available to explore. Or perhaps it has existed just below the surface of mainstream, literary fiction and now is rising to the top, glimpsable just below the surface. Perhaps there are other examples. Since the original "magical realism" never belonged to American writers, perhaps a new form of it could.
