Jane Feldman
is a noted photojournalist and author of many children's books. Feldman and Shannon Lanier co-wrote Jefferson's Children: The Story of One American Family. The Virginia General Assembly recently commended the pair for the success of their book, which was the result of a chance encounter between Lanier, the sixth great-grandson of Jefferson and slave Sally Hemings, and Feldman at the Monticello Association's annual reunion in May 1999. Expanding on their book, the coauthors have produced an interactive slide show presentation that offers audiences an overview of the history, controversy, and process used to bring these voices to light and lend credence to the importance of oral history. The inspiring presentation promotes fruitful discussion of slavery, racism, family, and beliefs.
