Escape Room: Search for the Boogerloo

Friday October 11th, 4:30pm-5:45pm @ Burke Centre Library

Join middle grade authors Jan Gangsei, Mark Maciejewski, Chris Tebbetts, and Rob Vlock as they search for the missing Boogerloo during their school themed escape room.

The room will be divided into teams and the first to solve the puzzles and riddles leading to the location of the Boogerloo will win bragging rights, plus a bundle of signed swag from your favorite author hosts! Escape Room: Search for the Boogerloo Sponsored by the Friends of the Burke Centre Library.

Let’s Pretend! A Poetry Workshop for Kids

10:30am – 11:45am

In her latest release, Soccerverse: Poems about Soccer, Elizabeth Steinglass brings the game of soccer to life through poetry, from inspiring coaches to the thoughts of a shin guard. Join Steinglass as she reads from her book, leads a discussion about the creation of poetry, and helps kids write their own poem about soccer through an exercise in pretending and personification. Exploring with Your Imagination

11:45am – 1:00pm

Like Samantha in Samantha Spinner and the Spectacular Specs, kids will discover the world as children’s writer Russell Ginns leads them on an interactive exploration of imagination and geography! Ginns will use buildings, statues, and landmarks to explain the inspiration behind the book, and to teach kids how he uses maps to create settings. Kids will solve puzzles, discover plenty of fun facts about amazing places, and learn more about the writing process. Exploring with Your Imagination!

Flowers and Fishes, Oh My!

1:00pm – 2:15pm

Learn about Fabulous Fishes and Fantastic Flowers with Susan Stockdale in a field trip above and below the sea. Then create your own pieces of astounding artwork! After learning about how picture book illustrations are created, kids will observe real flowers before using oil pastels to create their own. Flowers and Fishes, Oh My!

Bringing Ancient Stories to Life! A Live Drawing

2:15pm – 3:30pm

Gareth Hinds introduces kids to classic stories, from Beowulf to Shakespeare, to Edgar Allen Poe, through his graphic novels and live drawings. Watch his beautiful and dynamic art come to life while Hinds discusses his art and his latest release: The Illiad. Bringing Ancient Stories to Life! A Live Drawing

You Can Be a Leader, Too

3:30pm – 4:45pm

Senator Janet Howell and her daughter-in-law Theresa Howell team up to tell stories of powerful women in politics and history. In Leading the Way: Women in Power, kids meet some of the most influential leaders in American History. The Howells will lead a hands-on activity for kids interested in learning about local activism.
