About the Event
Jesse DeLong and Beth Gilstrap infuse every word of their poetry and prose with atmospheric tension, using nature to explore what it means to be human. DeLong’s poetry collection The Amateur Scientists Notebook uses scientific tables, field guides and more to draw the natural world together with philosophy, memory, and family. Gilstrap’s Deadheading and Other Stories intertwines her Southern Gothic narratives with nature — whether the characters are eating it or healing through it.

Jesse DeLong is the author of The Amateur Scientist’s Notebook published by Baobab Press. He grew up in Northern Idaho and Western Montana and currently teaches Composition and Literature at LSU. He holds an M.F.A. in Poetry from the University of Alabama where he studied under Peter Streckfus. His poems have appeared in Best New Poets 2011 as well as Colorado Review, Mid-American Review, Indiana Review, Painted Bride Quarterly and Typo. With book artist Sonja G. Rossow, he has published several artist’s books and chapbooks through Curley Head Press.
Beth Gilstrap is the author of I Am Barbarella (2015) from Twelve Winters Press. Her work has been selected as Longform.org’s “Fiction Pick of the Week” and chosen by Dan Chaon for inclusion in the Best Microfiction Anthology 2019. She holds an MFA from Chatham University. Her stories, essays, and hybrids have appeared in Ninth Letter, the Minnesota Review, Denver Quarterly, Gulf Stream Lit, and Wigleaf, among others. She lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, with a house full of critters.
